Going Big in Wolf Creek

  • February 27, 2016

From the first moment my skis hit the snow in Ruidoso last year I knew I had found a new passion. As we headed back towards San Antonio all I could think about was when I was going to be able to return. Over the next several months I read, watched, and learned everything I could about the sport. My enthusiasm grew so contagious that eventually Sarah’s whole family wanted me to plan a group trip for the upcoming season.

Given our nieces’ and nephews’ school schedules our timeline was early January so finding a ski area with good snow was a must. After weighing all the possible options I ultimately decided on Wolf Creek Ski Area due to its high annual snowfall and small crowds. In addition to Wolf Creek, Sarah and I planned to leave a few days earlier to visit some friends in Sante Fe and to try out Sante Fe Ski Area as well.

Thanks to a huge snowfall at the end of December, Sante Fe Ski Area was in prime condition when we arrived. While not a large resort by some comparisons the expansive views of the desert and mountains surrounding you makes it feel much bigger than it really is. Unfortunately the holiday crowds were still in full force but once we navigated towards the more difficult runs the trails began to thin out quite a bit. Overall it was a great day and definitely great to be back on skis!

Wolf Creek was also in great condition and received new snow nearly every day that we were there.
