Learning to Ski

  • January 8, 2015

Like every year I wanted to start 2015 off right and the only way I knew how to do that was with a fun filled adventure. While trying to plan such an adventure, Sarah and I debated things like a cruise or a camping trip but a strong, lingering desire I'd been having since seeing the film "Seven Sunny Days" back in 2009 finally reached a crescendo and convinced me it was time to try my hand at carving up some snowy mountain slopes. We had just been to Colorado a few months prior and really didn't feel like driving that far so we decided to look a bit closer to home. The nearest ski area was a place...

An East Coast Birthday

  • December 18, 2014

With the end of the 2014 approaching Sarah and I had been pondering what to do with the time-off I had scheduled around my twenty-sixth birthday. We thought about Honolulu because of how much fun we had on our honeymoon in Hawaii the year before and also discussed some sort of multi-state road-trip through the southeastern states given how many of our family members and friends live in that region. Fortunately though the decision was practically made for us when one of Sarah's close high school friends advised that her family would be relocating away from the Washington D.C. area in early 2015...

The Chosen Ones

  • October 25, 2014

Sarah and I signed up to run the Chosen Half-Marathon in New Braunfels, TX in support of her oldest sister's upcoming adoption. We did some basic training but not nearly as much as we would have liked. Our only goal for this race was to finish and both of us did much better than we expected. Kirk Scheidt Gun Time: 2:15:18 Chip Time: 2:14:46 Time Offset: 0:31 Pace: 10:17 Min/Mile Overall Place: 376 / 1027 Gender Place: 175 / 310 Age Place: 27 / 49 Sarah Scheidt Gun Time: 2:42:48 Chip Time: 2:42:16 Time Offset: 0:32 Pace: 12:23 Min/Mile Overall Place: 694 / 1027 Gender...

Climbing Colorado

  • September 29, 2014

It had been nearly three years since Sarah and I first summited Guadalupe Peak and my desire to climb the next mountain on my list was beginning to consume me. The second mountain on my "Seven Summits" list is Mt Elbert, the tallest mountain in Colorado. I hadn’t had an opportunity to go to Colorado yet but that eventually changed when one of my cousins from Colorado Springs invited Sarah and I to her wedding. I made sure to plan our trip so that it would include an opportunity to go mountain climbing and soon enough we were taking off from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport en route to Denver....

Surviving the World’s Toughest Boat Race

  • June 18, 2014

Preface: An Introduction to the Texas Water Safari When it comes to the Texas Water Safari there are three types of people: those that have no knowledge of this hellish challenge, those that have heard of the race, and those that KNOW the race. If you fall in the first category, stop and rethink your desire to learn more. Know that if you're the kind of person who is called by adventure or drawn to a challenge, this race will beckon you until it finally gets its chance to make you question how tough you really are.  The "World's Toughest Boat Race" traces its origins back to 1962 when Frank Brown...

Decompressing in Big Bend National Park

  • January 9, 2014

After another amazing year had drawn to a close, I pondered the ways that I could start 2014 on high note. My wife was officially at the half-way point in her law school career and we both felt that we needed to get away from the city for a while to decompress and relax. Given our desire to avoid anything crowded and our need for serenity, there was only one place to go; Big Bend National Park! Neither of us had been to Big Bend before so we didn't know exactly what to expect but everything and everyone described it as one of the most remote and peaceful environments in the world. A massive...

Hawaiian Honeymoon

  • August 6, 2013

Early on in the planning stages of our nuptials, Sarah and I agreed that she would be primarily in charge of the wedding day and that I would have complete creative control over the honeymoon. I certaintly had no quarrels with this arrangement and quickly found myself scouring the web, seeking out the perfect destination for our newlywed retreat. The options seemed limitless and ranged from private huts over the tropical waters of Bora Bora to romantic evenings in the streets of Paris, but everything seemed to be pointing to one place: Hawaii! Having never been to Hawaii before,...

The Missions of San Antonio

  • March 17, 2013

Recently I had talked with Sarah about having our wedding ceremony at one of the historic missions on the southside of San Antonio and though Sarah had grown up in the area her whole life, she could not recall having ever visited them. She had of course been to the Alamo, but the missions I was speaking of were the four lesser known missions along the San Antonio River on the south side of the city. Although a few of them are arguably more preserved and more beautiful than the Alamo, many visitors and even residents never venture out to see them or even worse, don't know they exist. Given...
